Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow

Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow are both forms of tendinopathy, which is a condition involving damage or inflammation to the tendons in the elbow. Despite their names, these conditions can occur in anyone, not just tennis players or golfers.

Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow?

  1. Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis):
    • Location: Pain occurs on the outer part of the elbow.
    • Cause: Overuse or repetitive motions of the forearm muscles, particularly those responsible for wrist extension.
    • Symptoms: Pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow, worsened by gripping or lifting objects, and weakness in the affected arm.
    • Treatment: Rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy to strengthen forearm muscles and improve flexibility, and in severe cases, corticosteroid injections or surgery.
  2. Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis):
    • Location: Pain occurs on the inner part of the elbow.
    • Cause: Overuse or repetitive motions of the forearm muscles, particularly those responsible for wrist flexion.
    • Symptoms: Pain and tenderness on the inside of the elbow, worsened by gripping or lifting objects, and weakness in the affected arm.
    • Treatment: Rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy to strengthen forearm muscles and improve flexibility, and in severe cases, corticosteroid injections or surgery.

Both conditions can be debilitating if left untreated, so it’s important to seek medical attention if you’re experiencing persistent elbow pain or weakness. A healthcare professional can provide an accurate diagnosis and recommend an appropriate treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
